Enrollment Requirement: Prerequisite: Graduate standing in Physics/Astronomy or instructor’s permission.
Comprehensive introduction to the quantities, concepts, techniques, and conventions essential to research in astronomy and astrophysics. Topics include: historical and practical overview of astronomy; census of astronomical objects; unit systems, classification schemes, and orders of magnitude; astrophysical dimensional analysis; basics of telescopes and instrumentation; overview of observatories and experiments; libraries, databases, and online resources; experimental design; introduction to statistics, modeling, computation, and data analysis; the publication process; professional considerations and ethics.
