The Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS), a Title VI National Resource Center, serves as a hub for Latin American-related activities at the University of Utah involving teaching, research and community outreach. On campus, CLAS partners with the Office of Global Engagement, Hinckley Institute of Politics, Department of World Languages and Cultures, and Second Language Teaching and Research Center, in addition to many individual departments and colleges, to facilitate the development of Latin America-related curriculum, public events, conferences, study abroad and internship programs.

CLAS also partners with a network of post-secondary institutions and community organizations in the state, including Brigham Young University, Salt Lake Community College, Utah Valley University, the Utah State Office of Education, Westside Pathways and Artes de México en Utah to promote education and research on Latin America, to support the nationally recognized Utah K-12 dual language immersion program in Spanish and Portuguese, and to recruit underrepresented groups to international education and language learning.

With over 76 faculty members across 31 departments and 13 colleges, including many who pursue interdisciplinary, comparative, and transnational approaches to Latin America, CLAS boasts strengths in Mexico, Brazil, tropical biology, Indigenous Studies and the Latino diaspora.

The center houses an interdisciplinary Latin American Studies program that offers the B.A. and M.A. degrees, with coursework that provides students with an understanding of both the shared traditions and the astounding cultural, ethnic, and linguistic diversity of the region.

These degrees are designed to provide students with critical language and cultural skills that serve as the foundation for careers in public service, business, non-profits, among others, in Latin America or working with Latino populations at home. Students can also pursue undergraduate and graduate study of Latin America in other interdisciplinary and Latin American language programs, including the major in International Studies, major, MA and PhD in Spanish, minor in Portuguese and Brazilian Studies, and MA and PhD minor field in Latin American History.

Our graduates work in a wide variety of fields, including foreign service, law, tourism, and humanitarian work, and our graduates have gone on to prestigious graduate programs at such institutions as UCLA, Pennsylvania State University, Georgetown University and the University of Florida.
