The undergraduate Bachelor of Science in Multi-Disciplinary Design uses product design as a vehicle to investigate design research, human centered design principles, interface development, articulation of product forms, materials and digital manufacturing principles. The program encompasses a curriculum with four substantive areas applicable to all design education: Studio, Technical, History/Theory and Practice. In addition to the classes and faculty from the Design program, the proposed curriculum leverages University of Utah faculty and courses from Fine Arts, Communication, Business, Bio-Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science and Psychology. This program will train our students to compete in an ever increasingly complex work environment with a thorough understanding of ethical conduct and social responsibility through these specific concepts:

  • inquiry and project-based learning
  • critical thinking skills
  • experimentation with multiple ways of problem solving
  • visual literacy
  • innovation and invention
  • team building and collaboration
  • identifying authentic real-world tasks and challenges
  • design research
  • human centered design principles

Admission Requirements

Students interested in the design major must declare their major as pre-design as soon as possible. Once university general requirements and design pre-requisites are complete, the student applies for admission to full major status in Design. Admission to the major will be based on a portfolio review. Students are encouraged to include work from pre-design courses as well as personal and professional projects, although not required. The review will look for completeness, capability, craftsmanship and aesthetics. In addition, students will be required to have at least a 3.0 GPA, however admission to the program is not based on design pre-requisite course grades. The application/review process will occur each spring; admitted students will begin the program the following fall semester. Students must complete all general requirements and design pre-requisites to apply. Visit our website at design.utah.edu for admissions information and portfolio requirements. Late applications will not be accepted.

Graduation Requirements

  • All pre-major and major courses must be completed with a C- or better.
  • Studio coursework is sequential and must be completed as such.
