Major Requirements for Electrical Engineering

Minimum Degree Hours: 124.5
Minimum Major Hours: 97.5

Admission Requirements

  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.80 on pre-major courses
  • A minimum cumulative 2.5 GPA on all U of U courses
  • Courses may only be repeated once. Courses repeated more than once will only have the second attempt counted in their technical GPA. The technical GPA is calculated from all ECE and CS classes.
  • Students complete the online application to be admitted to this major at http://www.ece.utah.edu/forms
  • Maximum credit hours that can be transferred for a single course is 4 credit hours

Graduation Requirements

  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50 is required.
  • A minimum technical GPA of 2.50 must be maintained from all CS and ECE courses.
  • All courses must be completed with a grade C- or better unless otherwise stated. All math classes must be completed with a grade C or better.
  • Each course may only be repeated once. If repeated more than once, then only the second grade will be counted.

Honors in Electrical Engineering

Students seeking an HBS in Electrical Engineering must complete:

Students have a choice between CHEM 1210 and CHEM 1215 OR BIOL 1210. If students choose Chemistry, CHEM 1215 will count towards one hour of non-ECE technical elective credit.

Advanced Technical Electives


Students must complete 27 hours of technical electives. The Breadth Requirement electives are counted towards these 27 hours. 

Technical electives can be chosen from any 3000+ level ECE classes that are not already required.

Up to 6 hours of approved non-ECE classes may count toward the 27 required hours.

Must be completed with a passing grade.

Announcements regarding changes in requirements are also posted on department bulletin boards and web site. It is essential that students obtain up-to-date information on changes in requirements and curriculum. Students must keep informed and are responsible for completion of program requirements.

The following classes are required for the B.S. degree in electrical engineering. Taking them in the order shown ensures that students have the necessary prerequisites. Students should plan their technical electives and general education classes to coordinate with these required classes.
