Admission Requirements

 Application Requirements

The following items must be submitted on the on-line application.  Paper copies will not be accepted.

  • Personal Statement
  • Resume or Curriculum Vitae
  • Three (3) Letters of Recommendation
  • Unofficial Transcripts - a minimum of a 3.00 or higher undergraduate GPA on a 4.0 scale is required
  • Graduate Records Examination (GRE) - must be taken within the last 5 years
    • Minimum combined score of 300 on quantitative and verbal sections.
    • Minimum 3.0 score on the writing section.
  • International Students
    • 80on the TOFEL iBT
    • 550 on TOEFL pBT
    • 6.5 IELTS

Graduate Program

Credit Limitations

Students may not count more than 9 credit hours of nonmatriculated graduate work toward any graduate degree. Only 6 credit hours of transfer work may be counted toward any graduate degree.  Transfer work requires prior approval.  Candidates for graduate degrees are required to maintain a 3.0 or higher GPA with no grade below a B- accepted toward degrees.

Degree Requirements
  • Complete a minimum of 30 credit hours in level 6000 (or above)
  • 22 hours are MSE coursework hours
    • 12 of these credit hours consist of MSE core courses 
  • 2 hours of MSE Graduate Seminar
  • Minimum of 6 hours are Thesis Research hours

Core Courses

 All graduate candidates are required to take the core courses and receive a B- or better grade regardless of where they received their undergraduate or Master’s degree.  The exception is for students who received the B.S. or M.S. degree from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Utah and received a B- or better in the required core courses.
