Admission Requirements

In order to take Mechanical Engineering (ME EN) courses and begin pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, a student must either be:

  • (freshman admit to the University of Utah) admitted to the College of Engineering with Intermediate Engineering Status, either at the time of admission to the University or after completing prerequisite courses.   See http://www.coe.utah.edu/admissions for more information. -OR-
  • (continuing University of Utah student or new transfer student) admitted to the Mechanical Engineering program and accepted to either Intermediate or Full Major Mechanical Engineering Status. See http://mech.utah.edu/academics/undergraduate/future-students/ for admission requirements and deadlines.
Intermediate Status

Students must be accepted to either Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Intermediate Status in order to take lower division (ME EN 1000-2999) coursework. Placement into MATH 1210/1310 Calculus I is required for acceptance to Intermediate Status.

Full Major Status

Students must be accepted to Full Major Status in order to take upper division (ME EN 3000-5999) coursework. Acceptance to Full Major Status is based on completion of first-year courses (ME EN 1000, 1010, 1300 or 2010; MATH 1210 or 1310, 1220 or 1320; CHEM 1210, 1215; PHYS 2210) with a GPA of 2.7 or higher.

Graduation Requirements

  • Maintain a cumulative University of Utah GPA of 2.5 or higher.
  • Complete all technical coursework with a grade of C or better.  (All courses must be taken for a letter grade. Courses may be repeated only once, and the second grade will replace the first grade.)
  • Earn a 2.3 (C+) cumulative GPA in the following upper division core ME EN courses:
    • 3000, 3220, 3230, 3300, 3400, 3610, 3710, 4610, 4650

Honors in Mechanical Engineering

Students seeking an HBS in Mechanical Engineering must complete:

Combined Degree

This degree can be completed as a combined degree with Mechanical Engineering, M.S.

Technical Elective Courses

Complete 12 hour(s) of upper division (3000-5999) technical elective coursework.

  • At least six of the twelve credit hours must be completed with regular Mechanical Engineering (ME EN ) courses numbered in the range 5000-5999, excluding ME EN 5910 (Cooperative Education), ME EN 5930 (Undergraduate Research), and ME EN 5950 (Independent Study).
  • A maximum of six credit hours may be completed from the following list: ME EN 4999 (Honors Thesis), ME EN 5910 (Cooperative Education), ME EN 5930 (Undergraduate Research), and ME EN 5950 (Independent Study), plus any of the approved non-ME technical elective courses (see list below).
  • ME EN courses in the 6000- and 7000-level ranges may only be used to satisfy the technical elective requirement if they are counted toward a BSME Emphasis or as an Honors College elective.
  • All technical electives (except ME EN 5910 Co-op) must be taken for a letter grade and completed with a grade of C or better.
  • Technical elective credit hours completed for an emphasis count towards the 12 hours.
