Minimum Degree Hours: 32 post-M.S. or 53 post-B.S.

Admissions Requirements

  • Minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or better
  • B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering or allied field
  • GRE Quantitative score above 80th percentile and a competitive score on the GRE Analytical section
  • International students must also score 590 (paper-based) or 96 (internet-based) on the TOEFL Exam or 7 on the IELTS Exam
  • These are minimum requirements and do not guarantee admission. The graduate admissions committee reviews all aspects of the application package before determining acceptance into the graduate program.

Graduation Requirements

Ph.D. Post-Bachelor’s
  1. Complete 24 regular course credit hours of graduate-level ME EN coursework with a grade of B- or better in each course.
  2. Complete 15 regular course credit hours of graduate-level electives (math, science, and/or engineering) with a grade of B- or better in each course.
  3. Achieve a cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 in Program of Study.
  4. Complete a minimum of 14 credit hours of ME EN 7970 Dissertation Research.
  5. Successfully complete the Ph.D. qualifying examination during the third semester (required for admission to candidacy).
  6. Successfully complete a research proposal defense.
  7. Successfully defend the doctoral dissertation before the supervisory committee.
Ph.D. Post-Master’s
  1. Complete 12 regular course credit hours of graduate-level ME EN coursework with a grade of B- or better in each course.
  2. Complete 6 regular course credit hours of graduate-level electives (math, science, and/or engineering) with a grade of B- or better in each course.
  3. Achieve a cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 in Program of Study.
  4. Complete a minimum of 14 credit hours of ME EN 7970 Dissertation Research.
  5. Successfully complete the Ph.D. qualifying examination during the second semester (required for admission to candidacy).
  6. Successfully complete a research proposal defense.
  7. Successfully defend the doctoral dissertation before the supervisory committee.
