Admission Requirements

Applicants must:

  1. Have a Master’s Degree in Music from an accredited university
  2. Meet the basic Doctoral admission requirements outlined by the University of Utah Graduate School
  3. Audition in person or by DVD, as outlined on the School of Music website
  4. Submit a Statement of Purpose
  5. Submit a current CV or resume
  6. Submit a comprehensive repertoire list of works performed and works studied
  7. Submit three letters of recommendation

Applications should be submitted to the University through the Admissions Office’s Apply Yourself web portal by February 15 for Fall admission. Please see the School of Music website for more information.

Graduation Requirements

Doctoral students are required to maintain a 3.0 or higher grade point average. A grade of “B-” or better is required for all music courses.

Written Qualifying Examinations must be completed in the Major Area and the Related Field.

Following a final recital and completion of a Dissertation Essay, each student must successfully complete an oral examination that will emphasize a defense of the paper/project and will provide clarification or answer questions regarding the qualifying exams.

Students working toward a D.M.A. choose one of five tracks: Instrumental Performance, Piano Performance, Vocal Performance, Choral Conducting, or Instrumental Conducting.

In addition to the major field, DMA students are required to complete 12 credit hours in a related field. Students may choose from music history or theory, composition, a secondary performance area, jazz studies, interdisciplinary studies, or music education. Each related field has specialized admission requirements and the choice is subject to approval by the desired area of study and the major professor. The Related Field should be chosen as early as possible, but no later than the end of the first year of study.
