The undergraduate major in Speech & Hearing Science is a pre-professional degree for Speech-Language Pathology and/or Audiology.

Admission Requirements

Students who have enrolled in CSD 1010 or who have completed a CSD course at another university and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 are eligible to declare a major in Speech and Hearing Science. Students are encouraged to schedule an appointment with the department’s undergraduate advisor either prior to or soon after declaring the major.

Graduation Requirements

  • Must maintain at least a 3.0 GPA in CSD courses
  • Must maintain at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA

Honors in Speech and Hearing Science

Students seeking an HBA or HBS in Speech and Hearing Science must complete:

Preparatory degree for the Graduate programs:

A master’s degree, or its equivalent, is required for professional practice in Speech-Language Pathology and a doctorate of Audiology (AuD) is required for professional practice in Audiology.

Allied Hours Requirement


Complete at least 9 hours in allied subjects. Three allied credit hours from each of the following areas are required to comply with American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s (ASHA) standards for certification:

  • 3 credit hours of biological science (Biology or Nutrition)
  • 3 credit hours of a physical science (Physics or Chemistry)
  • 3 credit hours of social or behavioral science (e.g., Psychology, Sociology, Cultural Anthropology, Gender Studies)
  • 3 credit hours of an upper division course in statistics (FCS 3210 , PSY 3000 , or SOC 3112 )

Allied courses may also be used to fulfill university general education requirements.

Clinical Observation Hours


Students must also complete 25 clock-hours of observation of speech, language, and/or hearing treatment before graduation.

Electives


In addition to major course offerings, the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Utah also offers courses which students can use for elective credits. These courses are open to majors and non-majors.
