Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Certificate

The TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) certificate prepares students to teach English to learners in the United States or abroad. The TESOL Certificate is a basic level program. This certificate may be in conjunction with another degree program or as a stand-alone program. It also may be taken as part of an undergraduate degree in Linguistics.

Admission Requirements

  • After being admitted to the University of Utah, students must fill out an TESOL application form with the TESOL Certificate advisor.
  • Non-native English speakers must have a minimum TOEFL score of 80 iBT or better, or a minimum IELTS band score of 6.5 or better. A minimum score of 76 on the Michigan Test will also be accepted.

Graduation Requirements

  • Students must receive a B or better in LING 1200 and WRTG 2010 or ESL 1060. Students must receive a B- or better in the TESOL Certificate courses (LING 3220, 3500, 3600, 5810, 5813).
  • A student is allowed to retake no more than one required course for grade improvement.
  • Students may count one transferred course toward the TESOL certificate courses. Transferred courses must be approved by the TESOL Certificate advisor.
  • All students wishing to receive the TESOL Certificate must pay a non-refundable processing fee of $55 to the Department of Linguistics. Students must notify the academic advisor of certificate completion two months before the last day of classes of the semester which the student completes the certificate.

 Complete all of the following courses with a B- or better

Language Requirement

Complete a beginning level foreign language course. May be taken within two years prior to entering the program. Should include at least 30 classroom hours in foreign language instruction.
