Master Requirements for Economics

Minimum Master Hours: 30

Admission Requirements:

Graduation Requirements:

  • Complete a minimum of 30 master-level credit hours
  • Complete project or thesis and oral defense within four years from first enrollment in the program
  • Complete economics core courses with a B- or better (ECON 6610, 6620, 6630)
  • Complete all other ECON master courses with a C- or better
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 in all course work
  • Master of Arts degree must also meet the university’s language requirement

Project/Thesis Courses


Project Option

Students who select the project option must fulfill the following requirements for a Master’s degree:

  • Successful completion, with at least a 3.0 average, of a minimum of 27 hours of approved graduate course work in Economics (and other acceptable areas).
  • Successful completion of the University’s language requirement of one language at standard proficiency (not required for M.S. candidates).
  • Successful completion of a research project, for which 3 credit hours are granted.
  • Successful oral defense of the research project.
Thesis Option

Students who choose the thesis option must fulfill the following requirements for a Master’s degree:

  • Successful completion, with at least a 3.0 average, of a minimum of 24 hours of approved graduate course work in Economics (and other acceptable areas)
  • Successful completion of the University’s language requirement of one language at standard proficiency (not required for M.S. candidates).
  • Successful completion of the Master’s thesis, for which 6 credit hours are granted.
  • Successful oral defense of the thesis.
