Elementary Education

The Elementary Teacher Education Program in the Urban Institute for Teacher Education at the University of Utah is designed to effectively prepare teacher candidates to work with students across various age and ability levels, and from diverse cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Degree Requirements

In order to graduate with a Bachelor’s of Science or Arts degree in Elementary Education, students must complete University of Utah requirements (General Education and Bachelor’s Degree requirements) in addition to the Elementary Teacher Education major and program requirements.

Licensure

Teaching licenses are granted by the Utah State Board of Education. The College of Education recommends candidates for a Utah Level I Teaching License grades k-6, upon successful completion of the program and exit exams.

ESL Endorsement

The majority of the courses required by the Utah State Board of Education for an ESL endorsement are included in this licensure program. Students wanting to earn the ESL endorsement will have 2 additional course requirements.

Admission Requirements

Candidates for the Elementary Education program are admitted on a rolling admissions basis. Complete application packets must be received no later than February 1st prior to the anticipated licensure year.  The application consists of:

• Application Form

• Statement of Professional Purpose

• Transcripts

• Three Letters of Recommendation

• Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators Test

• Background Check Clearance from the Utah State Board of Education

Background Check for Initial Licensure

In order to participate in any field-based course, including student teaching, students must pass a State and Federal background check (including fingerprinting) through the Utah State Board of Education. Background check clearance expires after three years, and may need to be renewed during the program, in order to be recommended for a teaching license.

Graduation Requirements

Courses must be completed with a grade of C or better and may only be attempted twice. If minimum grade is not earned on second attempt, contact the Elementary Advisor.
