Admission Requirements

In addition to the Graduate School application, students must submit the following to the Department of Film & Media Arts:

An example of your own work in film or video indicative of your personal creative approach to the medium. Your creative submission should showcase no more than 20 minutes of the best examples of your work. At least one complete piece should be included; “reels” or short excerpts of pieces are discouraged.  You may submit your work as a DVD or a URL link. Please include a separate document describing related information (medium, date completed, etc.) and your role in the work submitted (cinematographer, screenwriter, director, etc.). Your creative submission should be sent via email to paula.lee@utah.edu or mailed to:

Graduation Requirements

A grade of “B” or better is required in all courses to count toward the degree. 

  • Required core courses (21 credit hours)

FILM 6010 - Introduction to Graduate Studies 
FILM 6350 - Film Theory 
Two sections of FILM 6370 - Seminar: Film 
FILM 6950 - Individual Projects: Film Production  

  • 34 credit hours of elective graduate-level courses in FILM or allied disciplines
  • A successful completion of a comprehensive examination in film history
  • An evaluation of the M.F.A. thesis project, written by the student
  • A successful defense of a portfolio of work through an oral examination; the portfolio is then deposited with the Department of Film & Media Arts
