Biology, B.S. - Anatomy & Physiology Emphasis

Major Requirements for Biology BA/BS

Minimum Degree Hours: 122
Minimum Major Hours: 72

Graduation Requirements:

  • A minimum of 72 hours in science courses are required.
  • A minimum of 36 hours in BIOL courses are required.
  • 21 semester hours in BIOL courses must be completed at the U of U.
  • 2 BIOL lab courses including 3 lab units must be completed at the U of U.
  • All major courses must be completed with a C- or better.

Honors in Biology

Students seeking an HBA or HBS in Biology must complete:

  • Complete 3 semesters of research experience. The Biology Honors Faculty Advisor must approve research options. Students may opt to earn credit for their research by taking BIOL 4995  or BIOL 4955 .
  • Students must complete 3 semesters of Honors Research prior to enrolling in BIOL 4999 .

Ancillary Science Requirements

Biology rests on a foundation of mathematics and physical sciences. Biology majors must complete substantial ancillary work in Math, Chemistry, and Physics.


Note that admission to some graduate programs or career paths may require additional organic chemistry and labs.

Major Requirements for Biology - Anatomy & Physiology


Complete 18 credits of Biology Electives from the following list.

  • A minimum of 2 courses must be at the 5000-level.
  • No more than 6 credits of 2000-level courses may be used.
  • No more than 3 credits of BIOL 4955 may be used.
  • Honors Biology majors may use no more than 9 credits of Individual Research. A combination of  BIOL 4955 and BIOL 4995 may be used. 

Biology Laboratory Courses

Biology majors must complete a least 4 approved biology laboratory courses that total 5 lab units.

“Lab units” are assigned to laboratory courses by the department, and they range in value from 1-2 depending on the extent of laboratory expereince provided.

Some students may need to complete an additional 3-6 credits of approved scienec courses to fulfill the requirement for 72 credits of approved science courses.
