Admission Requirements

The following items must be submitted on the online application. All application materials must be submitted by the deadline. Late applications and paper copies will not be accepted.

  • Personal Statement
  • Resume or Curriculum Vitae
  • Three (3) Letters of Recommendation
  • Unofficial Transcripts - a minimum of a 3.00 or higher undergraduate GPA on a 4.0 scale is required
  • Graduate Records Examination (GRE) - must be taken within the last 5 years
    • Minimum combined score of 300 on quantitative and verbal sections.
    • Minimum 3.0 score on the writing section.
  • International Students
    • 80 on the TOFEL iBT
    • 550 on TOEFL pBT
    • 6.5 IELTS

Graduation Requirements 

Master of Science (MS) - Thesis Option

Complete a minimum of 30 credit hours in courses level 6000 or above:

  • 22 credit hours of coursework

    • 18 out of the 22 credits must be MSE courses. Exceptions to this rule are at the discretion of the student’s Supervisory Committee.

    • Of the required 18 credits of MSE courses, 12 credits will be dedicated to core MSE courses (MSE 6001, MSE 6011, MSE 6032, MSE 6034).

  • 2 hours of MSE Graduate Seminar (MSE 7800/7801)

  • Minimum of 6 hours of Thesis Research (MSE 6970)

  • All coursework must be completed at a cumulative 3.0 GPA (B grade average). All courses must be passed with a B- or better.

Students will also be required to complete the following requirements during the course of the program:

  • Supervisory Committee

  • Program of Study

  • Thesis and Defense

Master of Science (MS) - Non-Thesis Option

Complete a minimum of 30 credit hours in courses level 6000 or above:

  • 22 credit hours of coursework

    • 18 out of the 22 credits must be MSE courses. Exceptions to this rule are at the discretion of the student’s Supervisory Committee.

    • Of the required 18 credits of MSE courses, 12 credits will be dedicated to core MSE courses (MSE 6001, MSE 6011, MSE 6032, MSE 6034).

  • 2 hours of MSE Graduate Seminar (MSE 7800/7801)

  • Minimum of 6 hours of Special Project (MSE 6590)

  • All coursework must be completed at a cumulative 3.0 GPA (B grade average). All courses must be passed with a B- or better.

Students will also be required to complete the following requirements during the course of the program:

  • Supervisory Committee

  • Program of Study

  • Project and Defense

BS/MS Degree

Students must complete all the degree requirements for the MSE BS. For the MS, students must complete a minimum of 30 credit hours in courses level 6000 or above:

  • 21 credit hours of coursework

    • 18 out of the 21 credits must be MSE courses. Exceptions to this rule are at the discretion of the student’s Supervisory Committee.

    • Of the required 18 credits of MSE courses, 9 credits will be dedicated to core MSE courses (MSE 6011, MSE 6011, MSE 6032).

  • 1 hours of MSE Graduate Seminar (MSE 7800/7801)

  • Minimum of 8 hours of Thesis Research (MSE 6970)

  • All coursework must be completed at a cumulative 3.0 GPA (B grade average). All courses must be passed with a B- or better.

Students will also be required to complete the following requirements during the course of the program:

  • Supervisory Committee
  • Program of Study
  • Thesis/Project and Defense

Credit Limitations

Students may not count more than 9 credit hours of nonmatriculated graduate work toward any graduate degree. Only 6 credit hours of transfer work may be counted toward any graduate degree. Transfer work requires prior approval. Candidates for graduate degrees are required to maintain a 3.0 or higher GPA with no grade below a B- accepted toward degrees.

Core Courses


All entering MS students are required to take the following MSE core courses within their first two semesters, regardless of where they received their undergraduate degree.* These courses will count towards the total required MSE coursework hours. The remaining credit hours of required course work will be determined by a student’s faculty advisor.
