The Physical Therapy DPT is offered by the Department of Physical Therapy and this professional program prepares students for careers as licensed physical therapists.

Admission Requirements:

Applicants applying to the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program will complete two applications - the University of Utah Graduate Admissions Application and the PTCAS Application. Both applications can be completed online. The deadline for both applications is October 1. For more information, click here.

The DPT is offered by the Department of Physical Therapy as the entry-level degree into the profession and practice of physical therapy. Formal admission to the DPT program requires a bachelor’s degree in addition to the completion of specific prerequisite courses, reference letters, essays and successful completion of an interview process.

DPT Admission Requirements.

  1. Bachelor’s degree from a fully accredited college or university.
  2. An undergraduate GPA minimum of 3.0 based on all undergraduate work OR work completed during the last 2 years of study, whichever is higher.
  3. Pre-requisite GPA minimum of 3.0 (any individual grades below C not accepted; a C- is NOT acceptable).
  4. Work or volunteer experience with licensed physical therapist. (Suggested MINIMUM 100 hours)
  5. First Aid & CPR Certification (First Aid & CPR Certifications are required once accepted into the program; they are not necessary at time of application. First Aid & CPR have separate certification cards. CPR must include adult, child & infant choking; one- and two-man CPR, and CPR for the adult, child & infant)
  6. Completion of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), results posted prior to application. (CAS code 0407)
  7. If English is not the first language, applicants must take either the TOEFL or the IELTS to determine English proficiency.

Acceptance to the program is limited to one time yearly. Contact with the academic advisor of the department is highly recommended in preparation for application, or refer to the department website.

Graduation Requirements:

  • Doctor of physical therapy degree candidates must complete all classroom course work with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better with no pre-requisite course grades below C.
