Graduate Requirements for Biochemistry

Admission Requirements

Applicants should have a strong undergraduate background in chemistry, including organic and physical chemistry, and/or biology, including biochemistry and molecular biology. Applications must be accompanied by GRE results, transcripts, three letters of recommendation, and a statement of purpose and career goals.

Biochemistry participates in two campus-wide interdepartmental graduate programs: Molecular Biology Program and Biological Chemistry Program. Students interested in pursuing the Ph.D. in Biochemistry must first apply and be admitted to one of those programs where they are supported financially while they complete the requirements for their first year of graduate study. At the end of the first year, students choose a thesis advisor from and affiliate with one of the participating departments. For more information, see Bioscience Ph.D. Programs.

First-Year Requirements

Ph.D. Requirements

Students are required to complete a one-semester teaching assistantship. Participation in the departmental journal club class, research in progress meetings, seminars, and lab research conferences are also required. Candidates must pass a preliminary examination and submit and defend a dissertation based on original research. There are no foreign-language requirements.
