The School of Accounting offers students the chance to move beyond merely tracking income and assets. Graduates of our program engage in a wide variety of activities, including financial management, business transaction tracking, merger and acquisition strategy, information systems development, tax strategy, and wealth management. Our excellent faculty prepares students to enter a constantly evolving field full or stimulating and challenging work.
Many accounting undergraduates pursue a Master in Accounting (MAcc); in Utah, a master’s degree qualifies students to prepare for the examination to become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
Students who would like to major in Accounting must:
- Apply for and be admitted to Upper Division status in the Eccles School.
- 3.3 University of Utah GPA Minimum
- Grade of B or better in ACCTG 3600 or Equivalent
- Grade of B or better in MATH 1050, 1090, or 1100.
Admission Criteria. Admission criteria are reviewed annually and subject to change. Please visit http://eccles.utah.edu/programs/undergraduate/accounting/ to learn more about the current admission criteria and policies.
- All pre-business and upper-division business courses must be completed with a grade of C- or better.
Because of the sequence and prerequisites involved in the accounting major, students should allow at least three semesters to complete their degree requirements once they are admitted to full major status. Students wishing to major in Accounting are strongly encouraged to contact the Undergraduate Advising Coordinator, SFEBB 3165 or call (801) 587-8298 for more information and assistance in planning their schedule of classes.
Special Requirements. Students majoring in accounting must complete all pre-business courses before taking restricted upper division courses. Non-business majors must receive permission from the David Eccles School of Business Undergraduate Advising Office before registering for upper-division classes.
*The University of Utah requires completion of at least 122 total semester hours in order to be awarded an undergraduate degree. Some degrees may require more than 122 semester hours in order to complete all degree requirements.
