Master of Science in Occupational Health (MSOH) degree program has detailed programmatic educational objectives for each emphasis (Industrial Hygiene, Industrial Hygiene Hazardous Substance Training, Ergonomics, Safety Science, Occupational Injury Prevention and General Health). These MSOH degree emphases are overseen by the RMCOEH. Dr. Larson is the Program Director of the Graduate Programs in Occupational and Environmental Health which are housed primarily in the Division of Occupational and Environmental Health in the Department of Family & Preventive Medicine (DFPM) in the School of Medicine at the University of Utah. These programs also have major components in, and collaborative relationships with the University of Utah’s Departments of Mechanical Engineering, Internal Medicine, and the College of Mines. This hierarchy introduces many levels of educational objectives. It also translates into a constant, multi-faceted evaluation of the program’s success and its ability to attain the desired outcomes. The MSOH degree can typically be completed in 1.5 to 2 years and requires a research-based master’s thesis or project. Full time students may receive full or partial NIOSH stipend support. With stipends, the University of Utah may also include some tuition assistance.

Admission Requirements 

Applicants should have the following minimum qualifications:

•Baccalaureate degree with at least 120 semester hours (180 quarter hours), including 68 or more semester hours of technical courses

•Prior coursework in chemistry, physical sciences, biological sciences, and mathematics (at least through college algebra, preferably through calculus)

•A cumulative GPA in prior education programs of at least 3.0

The MSOH programs require the following from applicants:

•Completed University of Utah Graduate School application 

•Please apply to the correct program:

•The computer designation for the MSOH degree is “Occupational Health Masters of Science.”  

•GRE scores, Quantitative, Verbal, and Written, from within the past five years (except for those with a prior U.S. doctoral degree),

•TOEFL scores for international students,

•Three letters of reference,

•Goal statement not to exceed 500 words, and

•Personal interview after the application is approved by the Graduate School and RMCOEH admissions committee. 

In order to accommodate applicants who come from a significant distance, personal interviews can be arranged at a mutually convenient time.
