Minimum Course Requirements
The Department of Civil & Engineering requires all entering graduate students to have taken specific courses to enter into the program. Most students with a B.S. in Civil Engineering will meet these requirements.
Students with B.S. degrees in other areas please click here for a list of the required pre-requisites to the graduate program. These courses do not count towards a student’s graduate degree.
The following items must be submitted on the on-line application. Paper copies will not be accepted.
- Personal Statement
- Resume or Curriculum Vitae
- Three (3) letters of recommendation
- Unofficial Transcripts - a minimum of a 3.00 or higher undergraduate GPA on a 4.0 scale is required
- Graduate Records Examination (GRE) - must be taken within the last 5 years
- MS applicants - minimum combined score of 300 on quantitative and verbal sections.
- PhD applicants - minimum quantitative score of 155 and minimum combined score of 300 on quantitative and verbal sections.

Credit Limitations. Students may count no more than 6 credit hours of undergraduate or transfer work and 9 credit hours of non-matriculated graduate work toward any graduate degree without prior approval. Candidates for graduate degrees are required to maintain a 3.0 or higher GPA with no grade below C accepted toward degrees. In addition, only one course (maximum of 4 credit hours) with a grade of C+ or C may be accepted for credit towards a graduate degree. M.S. Non-Thesis Degree. The Master of Science, non-thesis degree is intended for those who wish to do work beyond the Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering but who do not wish to pursue the research oriented Master of Science thesis degree. As such, this option is typically for professional engineers.
A minimum of 30 credit hours is required. Students have 3 options for this degree: coursework only, project management, or research proposal. For more information please refer to the website. Each student’s course of study must be approved by the student’s supervisory committee.
M.S. Thesis Degree. The M.S. thesis degree allows for specialization in a particular discipline of Civil Engineering with an emphasis on research. A minimum of 30 credit hours, including 6 credit hours of thesis research, is required. The course of study must be approved by the student’s supervisory committee. Students must defend their thesis and have their committee pass them to graduate.
