Major Requirements for Biology

Minimum Degree Hours: 122
Minimum Major Hours: 72

Graduation Requirements:

  • A minimum of 72 hours in science courses are required.
  • A minimum of 36 hours in BIOL courses are required.
  • 21 semester hours in BIOL courses must be completed at the U of U.
  • 2 BIOL lab courses including 3 lab units must be completed at the U of U.
  • All major courses must be completed with a C- or better.

Ancillary Science Requirements


Biology rests on a foundation of mathematics and physical sciences. Biology majors must complete substantial ancillary work in Math, Chemistry, and Physics.

Note that admission to some graduate programs or career paths may require additional organic chemistry and labs.

Note that admission to some graduate programs or career paths may require physics labs.

Recommended Introductory Biology Course:


Biology majors are encouraged to complete BIOL 1210 - Principles of Biology  (4). BIOL 1210  is a prerequisite for the Biology core and most Biology electives.

Biology Electives


Complete 18 credits of Biology Electives from the following list.

Additional Approved Electives


Biology Laboratory Courses


Biology majors must complete at least 4 approved biology laboratory courses that total 5 lab units.

“Lab units” are assigned to laboratory courses by the department, and they range in value from 1 to 3 depending on the extent of laboratory experience provided.

One occurance of BIOL 4955 - Individual Research  will count as a lab course.

Science electives


Some students may need to complete an additional 3-6 CR of approved science courses to fulfill the requirement for 72 CR of approved science courses.

Honors Required Courses


Students who complete the Honors Degree requirements AND maintain a 3.5 gpa will recieve the Honors Degree (H.B.S or H.B.A.) designation on their diploma.

Electives


Complete 3 additional honors (HONOR or HON attribute) courses.

Thesis


Complete 1 Honors Thesis course (DEPT 4999) in your major department.

Final thesis must be approved by Honors Advisor.
