Major Requirements for Mathematics Teaching

Minimum Degree Hours: 122
Minimum Major Hours: 54

Graduation Requirements:

  • Maintain a minimum cumulative gpa of 2.8 in all mathematics courses.
  • All mathematics courses must be completed with a C+ or better and may only be attempted up to 3 times.
  • PHYS 2210  or 3210  must be completed with a grade of C- or better.
  • Complete the secondary teacher licensure program.

Graduation Requirements for students completing an honors degree:

  • Students pursuing this degree must first be admitted to the Honors College.
  • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 in courses required for the major.
  • All major courses must be completed with a B or better and may only be attempted up to 3 times.
  • Complete the secondary teacher licensure program.
  • Complete MATH 3000  (Undergraduate Colloquium) in addition to the regular course requirements.

Elective


Complete one course from the following list, or another MATH course numbered 4200 or above, except those excluded from the regular mathematics major.

Comprehensive Exam


To graduate with a mathematics teaching major students must receive a score of 165 or higher on the Praxis Exam #5161: “Mathematics: Content Knowledge.” To register see www.ets.org/praxis.

Honors Required Courses


Students who complete the Honors Degree requirements AND maintain a 3.5 gpa will recieve the Honors Degree (H.B.S or H.B.A.) designation on their diploma.

Complete 3 additional honors (HONOR or HON attribute) courses.

Thesis


Complete 1 Honors Thesis course (DEPT 4999) in your major department.

Final thesis must be approved by Honors Advisor.
