Description

This introductory course provides a foundational overview of the medical laboratory science (MLS) profession and its essential role in patient care and disease diagnosis. Students explore core disciplines including hematology, microbiology, clinical chemistry, immunology, blood banking, and body fluids analysis, along with the types of testing performed in each area. Through lectures, demonstrations, hands-on laboratory activities, and reflective assignments, students develop basic knowledge in specimen collection, basic laboratory techniques and instrumentation, and data interpretation, as well as assess their personal interest in pursuing a career in MLS. Designed for students exploring a degree in health sciences, the course highlights career pathways in laboratory medicine and prepares participants for advanced coursework in clinical diagnostics.
