Program Description
Pathways to Academic Dentistry is designed for students who are considering dental education as a full-time career or as an adjunct to clinical practice. The pathway will provide a structured curriculum around teaching and learning and will provide students with opportunities to serve as peer teachers. The Advanced General Dentistry Program is highly student self-directed learning with faculty guidance and mentorship. Students have allotted time for independent learning and peer teaching.
Program Admissions Requirements
Admissions requirements and selection method:
Matriculation as a D2 student at the UUSOD
In academic good standing (GPA: >3.0)
Approval of Group Practice Leader (GPL)
Submission of the standardized application with personal statement and relevant reflection paper from Pathways Engagement
Selection by the Pathways Course Director
Pathway-specific:
Students must have a passion for periodontics and dental implant surgery.
Three separate observations of a periodontist, for 2 hours minimum in their practice settings, is strongly urged prior to the start of the D3 year.
Grades in Perio Classes Considered (but not critical). Continuation in the program is contingent on the following:
Maintaining a GPA of >3.0
Meeting the benchmarks for completing clinical competency assessments
Maintaining professionalism standards for the UUSOD
Participating fully in all aspects of academic and clinical activities
Successfully completing all requirements established by the PCD
