Program Description

Electrical engineers change the way we interact with the world from computer circuitry, communications, optics, and power systems to putting smart electronics in our cars and smart wearable devices. Electrical Engineering is the branch of engineering that deals with the study, application, and technology of electronics. Our department offers classes in basic electronic circuits, power, energy, robotics, controls, electromagnetics, microwaves, optics, radio frequency circuits, semiconductors, metamaterials, nanoelectronics, microsensors, microelectromechanical systems, communications, integrated circuits, digital circuits, embedded systems, and signal/image processing.

Program Admissions Requirements

Direct Admission: Incoming Freshman that request and receive Direct Admission from the College of Engineering, and who have selected Electrical Engineering as their desired major, are immediately admitted to the major. For information about College of Engineering admissions, see the College website or the College of Engineering section of the course catalog.

Indirect Admission: Students not directly admitted can attain major status through the following process.

  • Meet with a departmental advisor to declare a “Pre-Electrical Engineering” designation.

  • Meet the following requirements.

    • C or higher in (course OR course OR course) OR (AP Calc AB score of 4 or better OR AP Calc BC score of 3 or better)

    • 2.8 or higher Utah GPA or Transfer GPA. The University of Utah GPA can have priority over the Transfer GPA

  • Meet with your advisor again and apply for major status.

Transfer Students: Maximum credit hours that can be transferred for a single course is 4 credit hours. All transfer classes are subject to evaluation and may be accepted or denied at the discretion of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
