Program Description

Construction engineering is a multidisciplinary field of study that focuses on planning, design, construction, management and maintenance of built environment systems including residential and commercial buildings, highways and roads, bridges, industrial plants, etc. Students will have the opportunity to develop expertise in both modern and traditional topics such as Building Information Modeling (BIM), Lean construction, project cost estimating scheduling, construction simulation, contracts and legal affairs, and smart buildings. Students will learn to improve their skills in problem-solving, critical, and analytical thinking, technical communications and teamwork. Graduate of this program will have the opportunity to work for both public and private sectors including construction contractors, engineering firms, departments of transportation, municipalities and cities, defense agencies, etc.

Program Admissions Requirements

  • Mean undergraduate GPA is 3.0+ on 4.0 GPA scale.

  • A prior degree in civil engineering is not required.

  • Proof of English Proficiency may be required. (More information.)

  • Required GRE sections: Verbal, Quantitative, Analytical Writing

    • Seek a combined verbal and quantitative score of 300+. Analytical 3.5+.

  • Recommendations: On the AppyYourself application there is a section for applicants to enter the names and email addresses of recommenders. After submission of the application, recommenders will receive an email that will allow them to upload their letter to the application.

    • Academic Letters of Recommendation are preferred.

  • Personal Statement: Describe how this degree will help you achieve your professional goals. The Departmental Admissions Committee pays close attention to this statement. Please prepare it with care and consideration. Please include the area that you wish to specialize in your statement (Environmental, Geotechnical, Structural, Transportation, Water Resources, or Materials.)

  • Applicants are NOT required to take the GRE if they meet one of the following:

    • Obtained a PE License

    • Graduated with a B.S. degree in engineering (or closely related field) AND have a GPA of 3.20 or higher.

    • If you are not required to take the GRE, please enter “0” on the application when it asks for your GRE scores. If you have a PE License, please upload a copy in the Post Submission section of the online application.
