Program Description

Our program in physical therapy has been preparing students to be highly competent and compassionate professionals for over 50 years. The Physical Therapy DPT is offered by the Department of Physical Therapy and Athletic Training and this professional program prepares students for careers as licensed physical therapists.

Program Admissions Requirements

Applicants applying to the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program will complete the PTCAS Application. This can be completed online. The deadline for the PTCAS application is October 1. Applicants invited to interview are also required to complete The University of Utah Graduate Admissions Application. Instructions for this application will be sent with the interview invitation. The DPT is offered by the Department of Physical Therapy and Athletic Training as the entry-level degree into the profession and practice of physical therapy. Formal admission to the DPT program requires a bachelor’s degree in addition to the completion of specific prerequisite courses, reference letters, essays and successful completion of an interview process.

DPT Admission Requirements

  1. Bachelor’s degree from a fully accredited college or university.

  2. An undergraduate GPA minimum of 3.0 based on all undergraduate work OR work completed during the last 2 years of study, whichever is higher.

  3. Pre-requisite GPA minimum of 3.0 (any individual grades below C not accepted; a C- is NOT acceptable).

  4. Work or volunteer experience with licensed physical therapist. (Suggested MINIMUM 100 hours)

  5. First Aid & CPR Certification (First Aid & CPR Certifications are required once accepted into the program; they are not necessary at the time of application. First Aid & CPR have separate certification cards. CPR must include adult, child & infant choking; one- and two-man CPR, and CPR for the adult, child & infant)

  6. GRE is not required for admission to the DPT program.

  7. If English is not the first language, applicants must take either the TOEFL or the IELTS to determine English proficiency.

Acceptance to the program is limited to one time yearly. Contact with the academic advisor of the department is highly recommended in preparation for application, or refer to the department website.
