The main questions that will be used to assess the curriculum are:

Are the identified learning objectives for the minor program in MD LB and PATH courses being achieved?
How are students performing in the MD LB courses compared to full major students, where performance indicators include exam and course grade distribution?
Are students satisfied with the curriculum, instructional support, course content, and resources for the MD LB and PATH courses?
Are there any challenges or opportunities for improvements?

Qualitative and quantitative methods will be employed to collect data needed to answer these questions. Qualitative methods will include collecting and analyzing course evaluations for each of the PATH and MD LB courses and responses to an anonymous exit survey (see Appendix A - Draft Exit Survey). The exit survey will be sent out at the end of each semester to students who completed their final requirements for the minor. This process will be tracked and managed by the undergraduate program director or faculty designee in concert with the surveys already being managed for the bachelor’s degree program. A summary of the responses will be compiled for review by the MLS Division Chief, undergraduate program officials, and the MLS faculty.

Quantitative methods will include collection and analysis of students’ course performance indicators (e.g., exam and course grades) and assessment of student performance on specific activities aligned with the program’s learning outcomes in each of the MD LB and PATH courses (see Appendix B - Example of Performance Indicators). Students completing MD LB or PATH courses as part of the minor will be enrolled in separate sections from students in the full MLS major to allow faculty to carefully monitor their progress throughout the semester. This will also allow faculty to compare the preparation and performance of students in the minor compared to full major students.

Individual faculty members will be responsible for collecting and analyzing data for their MD LB and/or PATH course(s) and submitting the following information at the end of each semester in which the course was offered and had students actively enrolled as part of the minor:

Course syllabi
Course evaluations
Faculty Teaching Report (FTR)

The Faculty Teaching Report will include a summary of the teaching methods, learning objectives, students’ performance indicators (grades, grade distribution, quality of work), performance compared to full major students, and course evaluations. The faculty writing the FTR will also include a reflection on how well the program learning objectives and course outcomes were achieved and the impact of previous revisions to the course. The faculty will also include their thoughts on what improvements should be made to address any identified deficiencies (see Appendix C - Faculty Teaching Report Example Template).

The MLS undergraduate program officials and the faculty member with administrative oversight for the minor will conduct a comprehensive review of the FTRs annually and provide a summary report for the MLS Division Chief, MLS faculty, and the undergraduate program’s advisory committee. These findings, along with a summary of responses to the exit survey, will be discussed at the annual faculty retreat (summer) with the MLS Division Chief, undergraduate program officials and MLS faculty members to determine the efficacy of previous changes and to identify any necessary changes and improvements to the curriculum that must occur for the upcoming academic year. Following discussion and consensus of the faculty, the undergraduate program director or faculty designee will create a written assessment report to ensure continuous data collection, analysis, and implementation for curricular assessment and development.
