Understand the underlying legal and policy principles related to intellectual property, including: The statutory, regulatory and common law bases, and the relative advantages and disadvantages.
Understand the formal requirements, including registration, maintenance, renewal, marking and duration.
Understand the means by which the Intellectual Property protections are obtained, including through the employer-employee relationship.
Understand the fundamental legal frameworks, both administrative and judicial, through which Intellectual Property rights are enforced.
Understand doctrines limiting the enforcement and enforceability of Intellectual Property rights (misuse, first sale, exhaustion, fair use, etc.); and remedies available in actions for Intellectual Property infringement (damages and injunctive relief).
