Substance Abuse Counseling
Description
This course is designed to provide an overview of the current theory, practice, and research related to substance abuse counseling. Emphasis is placed on developing awareness and knowledge of the specific issues related to substance abuse counseling as compared to other areas of counseling. The course also covers basic bio-chemistry and brain development/structure related to etiology/maintenance of drugs of abuse. Additional course objectives include understanding of the professional and ethical issues related to substance abuse counseling and discussion of practical approaches to substance abuse counseling in various prevention and treatment settings (e.g., schools, clinics, community, etc.).
