Description

This interdisciplinary course will discuss the social, cultural, and political dimensions of STEM education and related fields. Course participants will critically examine various topics related to the teaching and learning of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) across grade levels. The goal of the course is to identify and challenge the underlying assumptions about “objective knowledge” that dominate STEM fields. Readings for the course will draw from empirical research from each of the indicated disciplines. Additionally, the course will draw from philosophy of education, sociology, and political science in order to broaden our theorizing related to truth, knowledge, and power in STEM education.
