General Education Program Learning Outcome

Reason & Act Ethically

Articulate the basic structure, function, and hierarchy of court systems, including trial, appellate, civil, criminal, and administrative courts.

Understand basic jurisdictional concepts, including federal, state, and tribal sovereignty.

Identify and critically analyze the various sources of law, including constitutions, common law, statutes, regulations and judicial case interpretation.

Critically appraise and explain the core legal rights, doctrines and principles in the U.S. legal system.

Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills in the context of legal issues and analysis.

Develop critical thinking and legal reasoning skills through class discussions, case studies and other assignments.

Compare and contrast the civil and criminal adjudication systems and how they operate and gain an appreciation for how individuals, whether they be lawmakers, administrators, judges or jurors, impact law.

Assess theoretical models for how law develops and shapes behavior, and empirical analyses of whether these theories track in the real world.
