SW6638 - ACT and Mindfulness (3 cr)
College of Social WorkSW - College of Social Work
Description
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a “third wave” cognitive-behavioral therapy modality that incorporates mindfulness and acceptance strategies, and behavioral theory and application. ACT encourages clients to change their relationship to thinking and emotions, as opposed to the content or believability of thoughts and emotions themselves, in order to increase psychological flexibility and values-aligned action. ACT has demonstrated empirical support for treatment of a wide range of mental health concerns, including depression, anxiety, substance use, chronic pain, psychosis, traumatic stress, and disordered eating behaviors. Students will gain experience with specific skills and interventions of both ACT and mindfulness practice, along with an exploration of the underlying theory and treatment considerations. Through lecture, discussion, and experiential practice, students will gain an understanding of how to create and apply ACT practices and interventions across populations.
