Overview

Engineering is a problem-solving profession that uses science, technology, computers, and common sense to design, simulate, construct, maintain, and distribute goods, services, and information systems. Electrical and computer engineers work in researching, designing, developing, and operating many thousands of electrical systems and components that help run our world. They design all types of systems that use electricity, from microscopic sensors to large-scale power systems. In addition to computer chips, wireless communications, and signal processing, the undergraduate program at the University provides the intellectual tools and skills for specialization in control systems, microelectronics, lasers and optics, microwaves, and solid-state materials and devices.

Students in Other Majors

ECE Classes are open to U of U students who have the proper prerequisites. Students may request a permission code and will receive approval to take a class if they meet one of the following:

  • Meet the minimum grade requirement for all listed prerequisites, have a minimum of a 2.5 GPA, and space is available in the class.

  • Instructor's permission is given to take the course without the listed prerequisites or minimum 2.5 GPA requirement and space is available in the class.

Permission request forms are available on the ECE website. You are put on a waiting list and are registered during open registration on a first-come, first-served basis. See Permission Code Request Form: https://www.ece.utah.edu/permission-codes/

Scholarships

See the John and Marcia Price College of Engineering website at https://www.price.utah.edu/students/current/scholarships/ regarding ECE and College of Engineering undergraduate scholarships. Only one scholarship application needs to be completed.

Transfer Students

Students planning to transfer to the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department from other colleges and universities should read the section on transfer students on the ECE website: https://www.ece.utah.edu/transfer-student-admissions-and-resources/

After being admitted to the University of Utah, transfer students may need to petition the ECE or other departments for acceptance of transfer classes that the student expects to count toward major requirements. Student’s degree audits show which courses are counting for a major requirement. Transfer petition forms are available on the ECE website. Transfer students must complete the petition and have it evaluated by the department's transfer coordinator.
