Mission Statement
Honoring the rich traditions and shared history of moving image making and study, the Department of Film & Media Arts at the University of Utah develops and supports independent artists across the spectrum of contemporary film and media arts, and prepares graduates to be active participants in the evolving media landscape.
Overview
The Department of Film & Media Arts (F&MA) prepares students to engage a world increasingly shaped by moving pictures and sounds. Through courses on film and media - and their relation to culture, history, technology and aesthetics - F&MA teaches students to create and analyze moving images and sounds, to produce research, to explore proliferating media forms, and to make art. Through these practices, F&MA fosters future generations of global media citizens. F&MA students can tailor their degree across multiple areas of interest, including documentary, narrative and experimental filmmaking, animation, screenwriting, sound production, new media, film and media publishing, global film history, and film teaching.

Undergraduate Programs
The undergraduate program in Film & Media Arts promotes a holistic understanding of cinematic and media arts, integrating the study of history and criticism with comprehensive artistic and technical training and project-based learning. Our innovative curriculum introduces students to the full range of contemporary film and media arts practices, and then gives them the freedom to tailor their degrees across multiple areas of interest, from narrative, documentary, and experimental filmmaking, to traditional and computer animation, to virtual, immersive, and augmented reality.
Graduate Programs
The Master of Fine Arts in the Department of Film & Media Arts at the University of Utah is a three-year program designed to develop filmmakers who want to push the boundaries of conventional fictional and documentary storytelling.
Starting with a comprehensive foundation in the production, criticism, and history of film and media arts, students work closely with faculty committees to design a course of study that meets their creative and professional goals. Our students write, direct, and produce multiple projects over the course of their degrees, and exit the program prepared for careers as independent artists, contract professionals, and film and media teachers.
