Program Description
The professional program leading to the Master of Architecture (M.Arch) degree prepares students for careers as licensed architects and is a foundation for success in many other fields.
The Master of Architecture program is predicated upon a strong pre-professional degree in architecture. The curriculum features a series of studio courses integrated with co-curricular courses, leading to a degree in which students gain experience in design research, critical thinking, and leadership, as well as design process, architectural history and theory, communication skills, and building and environmental technologies. Electives may be drawn from the offerings in architecture and urban planning as well as a broad list of graduate level courses offered by the University. Electives may be used toward the completion of a graduate certificate. Graduate certificates are offered in historic preservation, urban design, urban planning, and real estate development.
A highlight of the M.Arch program is the immersive experience at the start of the final year. Students select from design-build, community engagement, urban design, and other offerings. The program culminates in a self-directed final studio project, in which the student completes focused research on an area of their choice and integrates information from an elective course taken outside of the College of Architecture + Planning.
Approved Combined/Dual Degrees
Master of Architecture has Dual Degrees with the following:
MS Architectural Studies
Master of Real Estate Development
Program Admissions Requirements
Students may enter the Master of Architecture program from several different backgrounds:
2-Year Program: Students who hold a B.S. in Architectural Studies from the University of Utah may be admitted to the 2-year program leading to the professional Master of Architecture degree. Applicants should submit a portfolio directly to the School of Architecture, plus an online University of Utah application, along with a personal statement, GRE scores, and other required documentation (as noted on the School of Architecture website), by January 10th.
Students who completed a pre-professional degree in architecture at another university may be admitted to the 2-year program leading to the professional Master of Architecture degree. If necessary, based on portfolio and transcript reviews and possible diagnostic examination, some prerequisite work may be required. Applicants should submit a portfolio directly to the School of Architecture, plus an online University of Utah application, along with two letters of recommendation, a personal statement, GRE scores, and other required documentation (as noted on the School of Architecture website), by January 10th.
3+ Program: Students who hold a baccalaureate degree in a field other than architecture may be admitted to the three-year plus one summer course of study, referred to as the 3+ Program, to obtain the professional Master of Architecture degree. Prior to admission, students need to have completed one course in calculus and one trigonometry based college-level general physics course. Students should possess at least an introductory-level ability in drawing with emphasis in freehand sketching. Applicants should submit a portfolio directly to the School of Architecture, plus an online University of Utah application, along with two letters of recommendation, a personal statement, GRE scores, and other required documentation (as noted on the School of Architecture website), by January 10th. Upon admission, the student registers for a group of intensive courses during the summer. The following fall and spring semesters, the student registers for courses that are similar to those listed for the final year of the B.S. degree in Architectural Studies. With the successful completion of those courses, the student then completes the requirements of the 2-year Master of Architecture program.
Students who complete a full architecture program not accredited by NAAB (usually a foreign architecture degree) may be admitted to the 2-year program leading to the professional Master of Architecture degree. If necessary, based on portfolio and transcript reviews and possible diagnostic examination, some prerequisite work may be required. A minimum of four semesters in residence are required for the M.Arch. degree. Applicants should submit a portfolio directly to the School of Architecture, plus an online University of Utah application, along with two letters of recommendation, a personal statement of purpose, GRE scores, and other required documentation (as noted on the School of Architecture website), by January 10th.
Further application information and portfolio guidelines can be found on the School of Architecture website (soa.cap.utah.edu).
