The Art History MA prepares students for professional careers or further advanced study. We welcome applicants with an outstanding scholastic record from an accredited college or university and expect that you will have a BA degree in Art History or a cognate discipline suitable to the study of art history and visual studies. The two-year competitive program culminating in a scholarly project or thesis offers students an opportunity to develop a specific research focus among the visual cultures of East Asia, ancient Imperial Rome, Middle Ages and Byzantium; Early Modern Europe (Renaissance and Baroque); or Modern and Contemporary Europe, Latin America, and the United States (18th to 21st centuries). The curriculum is oriented towards an interdisciplinary global perspective.

Financial Assistance: The Art History MA admissions committee automatically reviews all applications for assistance and offers financial aid to incoming students on a competitive basis. Students advanced to candidacy are also eligible for merit-based funding in the form of teaching assistantships, fellowships, and research and conference travel grants during the second year of residency. Funding for summer language study is also available. The deadline for submission of all materials to the University is February 1, and students are admitted only to the Fall Semester.

Application to the Art History MA is handled through the Graduate School, which sets minimum admissions criteria for all applicants. Students complete forms through the Graduate Admissions office's “Apply Yourself“ web portal. International students must comply with all application procedures and deadlines, including meeting English-language proficiencies as outlined by the University of Utah's International Admissions Office. Students matriculated into the MA Program for whom English is a second language may be required to take ESL classes in addition to departmental coursework. The GRE is not required for application to the MA Program in Art History.

In addition to basic documentation required by the Graduate School, the Program in Art History and Visual Studies requires the following supplementary materials from each applicant:

• Statement of purpose to explain your preparation, interests, and goals in the graduate study of art history. You should also identify one or two faculty members in the Program in Art History and Visual Studies who you believe would be best suited to mentor you in your area of interest within art history.

• Curriculum vitae (resume) with your academic background and other educational experiences.

• Academic writing sample (e.g., an undergraduate research paper) to show your most mature approach to research and writing.

• Two letters of recommendation by professors or instructors who are familiar with your academic work and can speak to your ability to succeed in a rigorous academic program [submitted online separately by your evaluators].

Applicants who do not meet the minimum requirements of the Graduate School may, in some cases, be admitted to the program on a probationary basis.
