Awareness of professional responsibility (integrity, ethical behavior, ability to work in a diverse group) begins during the orientation program to new graduate students, is continued through a research ethics course, and is emphasized throughout the student's tenure in the Ph.D. program. As chemistry is an international science that impacts a wide range of disciplines, the activities listed in the sections on knowledge and skills take place in a quite diverse setting thus preparing students for successful careers subsequent to obtaining their Ph.D.
Have an advanced understanding of the main branches of chemistry, namely analytical, inorganic, physical, organic and biological chemistry.
Have a thorough understanding of research design, methods of data collection, and methods of data analysis to design and conduct research in their area of specialization.
Complete and publish original research that contributes to knowledge in their area of specialization.
Write effectively about chemistry topics, making well-organized arguments supported by relevant evidence.
Demonstrate an ability to present and defend research work in oral, written and graphic forms.
Demonstrate the ability to work effectively as team members.
Demonstrate an understanding of their professional and ethical responsibilities and appreciation of the impact of chemistry in the societal context.
Be prepared to hold a faculty position in higher education or a research-related position in the public, private, or nonprofit sectors.
