Complete independent research and advance the state of knowledge in the field. This is demonstrated by publishing a minimum of three peer-reviewed publications in archival journal, or by preparing a Ph.D. dissertation.

Demonstrate strong grounding in the fundamentals, thorough knowledge of the primary literature, and an ability to design, communicate and execute a novel research plan.

Demonstrate the significance of his/her contributions to the field, and professionally communicate the results.
