Program Description
The Entertainment Arts and Engineering: Master Games Studio (EAE:MGS) is an interdisciplinary master's level graduate program at the University of Utah. The Masters of Entertainment Art and Engineering degree (MEAE) was jointly developed with the College of Engineering and the College of Fine Arts, and our aim is to produce graduates ready to design, develop, create assets, and provide leadership for the video games of today and tomorrow.
The program consists of four semesters. There are four tracks you may choose for the masters program: Game Arts, Game Engineering, Technical Art, and Game Production. Students in the Game Arts Track focus on the tools and techniques used in creating art assets for games. This includes animation, modeling, texturing, lighting, visual design, narrative, and concept art for games. Students will expand their visual skills as they create interactive worlds, cut scenes, and designs that are integrated into cutting edge games. This will be done with cutting-edge industry tools (Maya, ZBrush, Unreal Development Kit, Mixamo, Unity, Marmoset Toolbag, Adobe, etc.) using the latest equipment in a true entrepreneurial game development environment. A number of the courses are taught by industry professionals and share the latest techniques used in the game industry.
Students work both individually and in teams as they create visual work for games in conjunction with our computer science and production students. Students develop a focused concentration in specific creative and technical areas, as they integrate individual portfolio development with team-based projects. Students will also take courses in game design and are instrumental to the final look and play of the game.
Approved Combined/Dual Degrees
Master of Entertainment Arts & Engineering with:
Master of Business Administration
The purpose of this dual MBA/MEAE is to combine students’ applied interests and training in videogame development with the comprehensive business training gained through an MBA program. As there are many complementary intellectual and professional benefits associated with studying game development and business administration together this degree aims to provide a robust arena for that work.
Students can complete the MBA/MEAE dual-degree program in approximately three years of year-round study. Students will complete the requirements for both degrees with approximately 84 credit hours.
Master of Fine Arts in Film & Media Arts
