Review fulfilled when student has completed between 15 and 18 credit hours. No course is affiliated with review.
Complete at least 6 credits from the following types of courses: The preliminary exam consists of two essays responding to questions written primarily by the student and one essay responding to a question written by the student’s preliminary exam committee. Students are expected to do their preliminary exam after completing 36-42 hours of course work. The three members of the exam committee are chosen by the student from within the Department. A student who fails the exam may repeat it once; a student who fails the exam a second time will be discontinued from the program.

Specialty Area
Complete at least 9 credits from the following types of courses:
The specialty area is designed in consultation with your advisor. Typically, this includes nine additional hours in one of the two specialty areas within ECS: History, Philosophy and Sociological Studies; or Language, Culture and Curriculum.
Research Methodology
Complete at least 9 credits from the following types of courses:
All Ph.D. students complete a minimum of nine hours of course work in methodology and epistemology.
Complete at least 14 credits from the following types of courses: Thesis Hours
