Graduation Requirements

  • Coursework in the behavioral sciences, research and statistics, counseling and psychotherapy, and a special proficiency identified by the student

  • Counseling practice, including an introductory counseling practicum, a 1-year intensive core practicum at the University Counseling Center, approximately 2 years of advanced field practicum, and a 1-year pre-doctoral internship

  • Presentation at a regional/ national conference

  • Submission of a scholarly article or chapter to a peer-reviewed journal

  • Completion of a Pre-dissertation Research Project

  • Successful completion of the Doctoral Qualifying Examination

  • Completion of a Ph.D. Dissertation Research project

Timely completion of program requirements, in addition to adhering to a sequential, organized program of academic study as outlined in this handbook, includes satisfactory completion of the Doctoral Qualifying (Prelim) Examination, the pre-dissertation research project, the Doctoral Dissertation, as well as completing final paperwork and filing requirements for these research projects, and the predoctoral internship. As noted above, students must complete all requirements for the pre-dissertation research project by the end of their second year in the program. For students entering with a bachelor’s degree, completion of the Ph.D. by the end of the seventh year is a program requirement
