Honors Requirements
An emphasis is required for the program:
Students may earn two emphases:
Waived by successful completion of the ECE Emphasis and all K-3 Pre-Licensure Courses.
Waived by successful completion of the ECE Emphasis and all K-3 Pre-Licensure Courses.
Students in the Early Childhood Education Emphasis MUST take FCS 2600.
Students pursuing the Certified Child Life Specialist credential MUST take FCS 3010.
Minimum of 6 credits from courses numbered 5000 to 5999
Cleared by the completion of an emphasis.
6 total experiential learning credits can be used towards the elective requirement. Experiential learning course are FCS 4890 and FCS 5950.
Earn at least 12 credits
All courses must be completed with a C- or better
This requirement is waived with the completion of a second major, minor, or certificate
Cleared by the completion of an emphasis
C- or better required for all major course work
Graduation Requirements
A minimum of 18 hours in FCS courses must be completed at the U of U.
All major courses must be completed with a C- or better.
Minimum Emphasis Hours: 33
6 total experiential learning credits can be used towards the elective requirement. Experiential learning course are FCS 4890 and FCS 5950.
Recommended Allied Courses
In addition to the recommended courses listed above, any course from the following departments may also count toward the allied requirement: Anthropology, Biology, Chemistry, Communications, Communication Science Disorders, Disability Studies, Economics, Education, Education Culture and Society, Educational Psychology, Ethnic Studies, Gender Studies, Geography, Health Education, Health Society and Policy, Honors, Nursing, Nutrition, Occupational Therapy, Parks, Recreation and Tourism, Pediatrics, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Religious Studies, Social Work, Sociology, and Special Education.

FCS 2216 is waived by successful completion of all K-3 Pre-Licensure courses.
This requirement is waived by successful completion of K-3 Licensure Program.
EDU 5316 and 5643 are graded Credit/No Credit
Must earn C or better in MATH 4010 and 4020
Must earn B or better in all other pre-licensure courses
Student must apply and be admitted into the K-3 Licensure Program.
Admission Requirements
Application timeline:
We recommend that students who begin the combined program as first year students formally apply during their second year of course work. Students who begin the program later in their college career should meet with an academic advisor to determine the best time to apply for the licensure component. Applications are due no later than February 1 of the year that the applicant plans to complete their licensure year ( ex. due February 1, 2027 for students planning on the 2027-2028 licensure year.)

Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher

Teaching licenses are granted by the Utah State Board of Education. The College of Education recommends candidates for a Professional License grades K-3, upon successful completion of the program and exit exams.
