Speak and understand, both orally and in print, the Japanese language in ordinary living situations as well as in limited professional and business matters. Full knowledge of the two Japanese phonetic alphabets with working knowledge of and limited ability to use Chinese characters. Students' speaking, listening, reading, and writing proficiency in these areas should approximately be intermediate-mid on the ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) proficiency scale.

Demonstrate an interdisciplinary understanding of Japanese culture. Identify and demonstrate moderate knowledge of one or more of the following: modern literature, premodern literature, linguistics, cross-border identities, social and/or intellectual culture.

Develop and demonstrate written and oral communication and presentational skills that evidence critical thinking, thoughtful analysis, and coherent argumentation in English and, to a limited degree, in Japanese.
