The program does not require an additional foreign language beyond Spanish but does strongly encourage students to take advantage of departmental offerings to advance proficiency in an additional foreign language.

  • Candidates in M.A. Language Pedagogy should possess proficiency in Spanish at the Advanced Level (or its equivalent) according to the ACTFL proficiency guidelines.

  • In their last semester of study students must complete a comprehensive examination based on the MALP reading list. The exam covers three areas: (1) Language Teaching Methodologies; (2) Second Language Acquisition; (3) Elective area to be selected in consultation with the MALP advisor.

Students must prove “Standard Proficiency” (second-semester language course 1020) in two languages other than English and Spanish, or “Advanced Proficiency” (forth-semester language course 2020) in one language other than English and Spanish. Completion of the MA Language Proficiency requirement will satisfy part of this language requirement.
