An emphasis is required for the program:
The program does not require an additional foreign language beyond Spanish but does strongly encourage students to take advantage of departmental offerings to advance proficiency in an additional foreign language.
Candidates in M.A. Language Pedagogy should possess proficiency in Spanish at the Advanced Level (or its equivalent) according to the ACTFL proficiency guidelines.
In their last semester of study students must complete a comprehensive examination based on the MALP reading list. The exam covers three areas: (1) Language Teaching Methodologies; (2) Second Language Acquisition; (3) Elective area to be selected in consultation with the MALP advisor.
Students must prove “Standard Proficiency” (second-semester language course 1020) in two languages other than English and Spanish, or “Advanced Proficiency” (forth-semester language course 2020) in one language other than English and Spanish. Completion of the MA Language Proficiency requirement will satisfy part of this language requirement.
