Understand the fundamental aspects of the civil justice system in the United States, including alternatives to dispute resolution other than litigation, with a focus on the substantive legal and policy issues presented by and in that system, as well as relevant evidentiary, procedural, and constitutional frameworks for the law.

Develop fundamental skills needed by the modern civil litigator, including at the trial and appellate levels as well as through alternate forms of dispute resolution such as mediation and arbitration.

Develop a sophisticated understanding of the overall governance system in which the U.S. civil litigation system rests, both for state and federal law, either by specializing in a particular area of litigation or ADR study or by taking a breadth of courses in this area.
