S.J. Quinney College of Law Master of Legal Studies

Program Contact Information

Program Description

The Master of Legal Studies degree is a three-semester program that provides a foundation for working with and understanding the law and regulation. Students learn how to think and communicate broadly about legal issues affecting various careers and industries, understand contemporary legal issues, and know the practical implications of the law.

The MLS degree is available in two convenient formats: the In-Person MLS Program and the Online MLS Program. Both programs run for three semesters (fall, spring, and fall), and students need 30 credits to graduate.

Our curriculum provides students with a deeper understanding of the legal system, with an emphasis on law’s role in the modern world. Courses focus on areas of law most commonly encountered by executives and working professionals, including contracts, intellectual property, litigation, regulation, conflict resolution, employment, and compliance.

In-Person MLS Program: Our in-person program meets every other weekend, on Friday and Saturday, from 8a.m. to 5p.m. Classes are held at the S.J. Quinney College of Law on the University of Utah campus in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Online MLS Program: Students can earn their MLS degree entirely online. The online curriculum is the same as the in-person program. Content is delivered “asynchronously,” meaning students can generally complete the work on their own time without attending scheduled classes or meetings.

The MLS program uses a cohort system, and students come from a variety of backgrounds and professions, including human resources, compliance and risk management, education, paralegals and other legal paraprofessionals, mediation, real estate, and social work, to name just a few.
