Demonstrate an ability to develop a research proposal and carry out independent research.

Demonstrate understanding of the theoretical foundations and computational techniques of their subject and will be able to apply these concepts and tools to solve a wide variety of problems in at least one area of specialization within mathematics.

Have a in-depth understanding and mastery of the literature in at least one particular subfield of mathematics. Applied mathematicians will also demonstrate mastery of their area of application.
