Program Description

The University of Utah’s School of Dance, consistently recognized as one of the top programs in the country and accredited by the National Association of Schools of Dance (NASD), offers a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Dance & Choreography for students interested in pursuing their passion for creative expression. The MFA is a 60-credit terminal degree, requiring two years of residency in the School of Dance. The MFA includes both a core curriculum and the ability to design a personalized course of study, leading the candidate toward completion of a creative thesis project, written thesis, and oral examination. Graduates are prepared for careers as educators, artists, choreographers, administrators, scholars, and more.

Funding/Assistantships

All applicants may request consideration for funding. More information about the Graduate Tuition Benefit can be found here.

  • Full-time Teaching Assistantships include a tuition waiver (up to 15 credits per semester, not to exceed 60 total credit hours across two years), accompanying stipend divided across each semester and paid according to the University payroll schedule, and eligibility for the University Graduate Student Health Insurance Program. Full-time Teaching Assistantships require up to 20 hours of teaching-related work per week.

  • Candidates who wish to earn an MFA degree without the obligations of a Teaching Assistantship are also welcome to apply. Tuition costs will fall to the candidate, and health insurance benefits are not included.
