Program Admissions Requirements

The Department of Pathology participates in two campus-wide interdepartmental graduate programs: Molecular Biology Program and Biological Chemistry Program. Students interested in pursuing a Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology are recommended to first apply and be admitted to one of those programs where they are supported financially while they complete the requirements for their first year of graduate study. At the end of the first year, students choose a thesis advisor from and affiliate with one of the participating departments. For more information, see Bioscience Ph.D. Programs.

In exceptional circumstances students can be directly admitted into the M&I Graduate Program via a specific lab. To be considered for admission, the student should submit the following documents to Kim Springer (kim.springer@path.utah.edu):

  • CV

  • Transcripts from undergraduate and, if applicable, any graduate degrees

  • Personal statement 1-2 pages in length outlining previous research experience and detailing the drive to undertake a PhD in the lab of choice

  • Letter of recommendation / commitment from the PI of the chosen lab

  • 3 other letters of recommendation outlining aptitude for research.

If Direct Admission is deemed appropriate, the student will be interviewed by the Executive Committee of the M&I Graduate Program. Applicants should have an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or more. It takes anywhere from 2 months to 6 months to complete paperwork associated with admission. While admission is preferred for a Fall start, Summer admissions may be considered by the Executive Committee.
